The LSU Tigers are off to an impressive start to the college basketball season, and no player has been more impressive for them to this point than Johnny O’Bryant III. The junior forward leads the Tigers in scoring and rebounding, and has also played a major leadership role this year. There is no doubt that he is the top NBA prospect on the current LSU roster, and based on what we have seen to this point there is every reason to believe that he will only get better as the year goes on. For those that don’t follow SEC basketball closely, it’s easy to forget that only two years ago it was O’Bryant III who only two years ago was talking about being a one-and-done at the college level. He wasn’t the only one that thought he would leave after just a single season either, but after a sub-par freshman year it was clear that he was not ready to play at a higher level just yet. O’Bryant III worked hard to improve on the glass and become a more complete player at LSU, and his hard work has really paid off for him early this season, as he has averaged a team-high 13.7 points per game and 7.3 rebounds. At 6’9’’ and 256 pounds, O’Bryant has the size and skill that so many NBA teams needs, and that has him at the top of the list of prospects at LSU.

One Tigers’ prospect that has developed in a hurry is freshman forward Jordan Mickey, who has averaged 13.2 points per game and 7.1 rebounds this season. The first-year forward has made an immediate impact on this LSU team, and part of that does have to do with the presence of O’Bryant, who has helped the young star along. At 6’8’’, 220 pounds, Mickey has the body to be an elite NBA prospect, and he will only get better as he continues to gain experience and develop at this level. It’s amazing to think about how good Mickey is already, and the scouts have taken note.

Another freshman that has received his share of attention is Jarrell Martin, who also has the physical build and ability to become a top NBA prospect. Martin has averaged just nine points per game in his first year at LSU, but he has a strong skill set that includes both the ability to bang inside, as well as the ability to step out and hit the three-ball from beyond the arc. That skill set makes the 6’9’’ forward that much more dangerous, and like Mickey, he has been able to play at a high level from the outset. Mickey and Martin both have the potential to stay a little longer in order to develop their skill set for the next level, but they are already right there with O’Bryant III as the best NBA prospects on this LSU team, and they could end up leaving for the chance to play at the next level sooner than expected.
